Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce

I will admit, years ago, I used to be a bit of a wimp when it came to spicy foods. I never really grew up eating anything spicy, so I was rather timid about anything that might be too hot. But, as I have experimented with different flavors, I have come to love the burn of spicy foods and fiery peppers – and I am slowly starting to convert Steve over to the dark side too! 😉

But as much as I like the heat, I also like to be able to enjoy the flavors. For my preference, I think heat should enhance the flavors of whatever you are eating, allowing you to feel a slight burn, while still tasting (and enjoying) whatever you are eating. Maybe, I’m just still a bit of a wimp… but I just don’t want it to be so hot it burns your face off. (No offense to those who love fire and can’t get it hot enough – you do you!)

For me, this Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce is just the right blend and balance of spicy heat from the habanero peppers, sweet fruitiness from the pineapple, refreshing herbaceousness from the cilantro, and vinegary tang. It has a slight heat, but definitely is not too hot. If you want this extra spicy, you can always crank the heat up even more by leaving the seeds in the peppers and even adding one or two extra peppers. Either way, I can guarantee this will be delicious!

How Do You Make Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce?

I love the spicy, vinegary kick that hot sauce adds to just about everything, so I use hot sauce on something probably at least every other day, or maybe more. So we definitely go through some hot sauce around here! I have always wanted to make my own hot sauce, but had never finally gotten around to doing it. Well after I bought a big bag of habanero peppers to make some jerk chicken and only ended up using about two in the jerk sauce, I realized it might be a good excuse to try my hand making Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce.

Boy am I glad that I did! This Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce, was quick and easy to make. The steps for making homemade hot sauce are:

  • Roughly chop all of the ingredients (use gloves when handling the hot peppers!)
  • Add the ingredients to a blender or food processor (I used my trusty Magic Bullet)
  • Pour into a sauce pan and heat over medium heat for about 15 minutes to let the flavors come together
  • Push the sauce through a fine mesh strainer to remove any pulp
  • Refrigerate until ready to use

When chopping the peppers, I removed all of the seeds and membranes as I didn’t want this to get too spicy. If you want to step up the heat, feel free to leave them in – or you can even add another pepper.

The last step of straining the sauce is optional, but I wanted this to be a pretty thin hot sauce (like what you would buy in a bottle). Depending on your use and preference, you can skip this last step if you want a thicker hot sauce.

What Should I Eat Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce with?

I served this Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce with some steak fajita bowls (honestly, I pretty much drowned my bowl with this sauce), and it was the perfect sweet, spicy, and tangy addition to charred steak, peppers, and onions served over rice. With its combination and sweet and spicy, blended with cilantro and cumin, this habanero hot sauce lends itself to pairing well with Mexican dishes.

But I could eat it on pretty much anything, including:

How Long Does Homemade Hot Sauce Keep for?

Thanks to the high vinegar content in the hot sauce, this Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce should keep for about a week or two in the refrigerator, but if you are like me, it won’t be around that long.

If you are like me and had never made hot sauce before for whatever reason, I definitely recommend checking this Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce out. It is quick and easy to whip up, and you will certainly find yourself looking for lots of new options to drizzle it all over.

Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce

A sweet and spicy hot sauce recipe using sweet pineapple to tame the fiery heat of habanero peppers and enhance their natural fruity flavors. Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce is perfect for dousing on tacos, burrito bowls, eggs, or anything else you want to kick up a notch.
Prep Time5 minutes
Cook Time15 minutes
Total Time20 minutes
Course: Appetizer, Sauces, Side Dish
Cuisine: American, Mexican
Keyword: habanero, hot sauce, vegan
Servings: 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup pineapple (canned or fresh)
  • 4 habanero peppers (seeds removed or see note)
  • ½ small onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 small handful of cilantro
  • ½ inch piece of ginger
  • ¼ tsp ground cumin
  • 1 lime (juiced)
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  • Roughly chop all ingredients, add to food processor or blender with cumin, juice of one lime, and vinegar. Process until smooth.
  • Pour sauce into a small sauce pan and heat over medium heat for about 15 minutes to let the flavors come together and cook the ingredients.
  • Cool slightly, then pour the sauce through a fine mesh strainer to remove any pulp. I use the back of a spoon to help push the sauce through. If you want a chunkier hot sauce, skip the straining. Or you can strain the sauce, and then add a little of the pulp back in to reach your desired consistency.
  • Pour into glass jar or bottle, and refrigerate until ready to use.

Notes

When chopping the peppers, I removed all of the seeds and membranes as I didn’t want this to get too spicy. If you want to step up the heat, feel free to leave them in – or you can even add another pepper or two.

It’s a good start. Needs salt. Tweak to your own liking on the balance of salt, heat, vinegar, and sweet.

    1. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of experience canning myself, but if you do plan on canning it, I would make sure to check that the ph is low enough and follow proper canning procedures. Stored in the fridge, this should keep a couple of weeks.
