Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes Recipe

I have to admit, these Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes might not be anything too fancy to look at. But, if you are looking for a weeknight dinner idea that is quick and easy, and sure to be a hit with the entire family, these sandwiches are just the thing you have been searching for.

I love a good philly cheese steak sandwich, or anything philly cheese steak inspired really (I’m looking at you Philly Cheese Steak Pizza), but sometimes thinly slicing up the steak just feels like to much work when I am trying to get dinner ready quickly. Plus, if I didn’t plan ahead for dinner, I don’t usually just have steak sitting around in the fridge.

With these Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes, I wanted them to be a mix between gooey, meaty sloppy joes with the traditional flavors of a philly cheese steak. I used browned ground beef in place of the steak, mixed in some peppers, onions, and garlic, and added a simple beefy flavored sauce. When piled in a hoagie roll or bun and topped with melted cheese, these sandwiches are cheesy, meaty, and flavorful.

Can I Add Extra Veggies to Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes?

When making these Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes, I used our favorite philly cheese steak toppings of sautéed green peppers and onions. But if you want to up the veggies (and make these sandwiches a little healthier), there are lots of different options you could add in depending on your tastes.

Some optional mix ins that you could sauté in with the peppers and onions include:

  • Red, Orange, or Yellow Bell Peppers
  • Sliced Mushrooms
  • Banana Peppers
  • Pablano or Jalapeno Peppers (if you want a kick)
  • Fresh Baby Spinach (this definitely isn’t traditional, but would ramp up the nutrition level, and I always love sautéed baby spinach with gooey melted cheese)

If you want to make these sloppy joes even healthier, you can even skip the hoagie and serve it in lettuce cups, but you know I’m not going to pass up the carbs! 😉

Can I Use Cheese Whiz on My Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes?

We usually prefer gooey melted provolone cheese on our philly cheese steak sandwiches as it melts just right, leaving that gooey, cheese pull that I can’t get enough of. If you like other kinds of cheeses, you can definitely mix it up. Feel free to top your philly cheese steak ground beef with a slathering of cheese whiz if that’s your thing or melt on some American, Swiss, or even mozzarella. When it comes to cheese of any kind, I find it’s hard to go wrong.

Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (I used 85/15)
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 small green pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tbs butter
  • 2 tbs ketchup
  • 1 tbs Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbs cornstarch
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 6 hoagie rolls or buns
  • 6 - 12 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  • In a skillet, brown ground beef until cooked through.
  • While the beef cooks, slice the onion and peppers and mince the garlic.
  • Removed cooked beef from skillet, draining any excess grease if necessary.
  • In same skillet over medium heat, add 1 tbs butter, and cook onions, peppers, and garlic for about 4 - 5 minutes until they begin to soften.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the ketchup, Worcestershire, salt, pepper, cornstarch, and beef broth. Add to skillet and return meat to pan. Cook an additional 2 – 3 minutes until the mixture thickens to a sauce.
  • Spoon meat and vegetable mixture on to rolls or buns, top with 1 – 2 slices cheese each (I like to layer some cheese under the meat and another layer on top). Place sandwiches under broiler for 1 -2 minutes to melt cheese (watching closely so bread does not burn).
