Why I Love This Cheesy French Onion & Chicken Ravioli Bake

I love a good hearty baked pasta recipe. From Beef Stroganoff Stuffed Shells to this Chicken Ravioli Bake with Caramelized Onions, anything with pasta coated in a creamy sauce and covered in melty cheese is a win in my book.

This Cheesy French Onion & Chicken Ravioli Bake is the best easy comfort food, perfect for cozy weeknight dinners. It has layers of cheesy ravioli, tender shredded chicken, sweet caramelized onions, a creamy sauce, and a melty cheesy topping. A bit of fresh thyme adds an earthy flavor with lemony undertones, balancing out all of the rich cheesy flavors.

Plus, everything cooks in just one skillet – no need to even pre-boil the ravioli – so there are minimal dishes and easy cleanup.

But what’s is even better is that this Cheesy Chicken Ravioli Bake is packed with flavor. A lot of easy ravioli bake recipes have you just opening a jar of sauce and pouring it over the ravioli before baking in the oven. While there is nothing necessarily wrong with that, this recipe brings a lot more flavor, all without too much extra work.

How Do You Make This Cheesy Chicken & Ravioli Casserole?

To cook this Cheesy French Onion & Chicken Ravioli Bake, you only need one oven-safe skillet. I love my enameled cast iron braiser for this as it goes from stovetop to oven easily.

In the skillet:

  • Start by caramelizing the onions: I use a method inspired by this Caramelized Onion and Sausage Frittata recipe where the onions are cooked in a skillet with the lid on for about 15 minutes, before uncovering and finishing the caramelization for a few more minutes. Keeping the lid on for the first stage of the cooking keeps the moisture in, allowing the onions to caramelize more quickly – just be sure to stir every 5 minutes or so to make sure the onions don’t burn.
  • Make a quick sauce: Next, you stir in some flour, seasonings (fresh thyme, garlic, salt, and pepper), and add the beef broth and milk and cook a couple of minutes until it just begins to thicken. The sauce will thicken more in the oven.
  • Add chicken & ravioli: Then you just stir in some shredded, cooked chicken and the frozen cheese ravioli – no need to thaw or pre-cook. Spread the ravioli in an even layer, and top with a good amount of freshly shredded cheese. I used a combination of swiss and mozzarella, bringing those hearty French onion soup vibes, but you can use all mozzarella if you aren’t a fan of tangy swiss cheese.
  • Bake & enjoy: Transfer skillet to the oven, and bake about 20 minutes until the pasta is hot and bubbly and cheese is melted. Serve with your favorite crusty bread for scooping up extra sauce, if desired.

More Ravioli Bake Variations

It is easy to customize this ravioli bake to your preferences or depending on what you have available. Here are some suggestions and substitutions you can try:

  • Swap the Meat: You can replace the chicken with cooked, shredded or ground beef or even add in your favorite precooked chicken sausage.
  • Swap the Ravioli: This would be tasty with any flavor of ravioli. You could use a meat ravioli and leave out the chicken or add a spinach or mushroom and cheese ravioli. You can even make this pasta bake with frozen tortellini.
  • Go Meatless: Replace the chicken with a can of white beans for a hearty, meatless dinner.
  • Add in More Veggies: Want to make this a complete one pan meal, add in some extra veggies. You can stir in spinach, kale, chopped broccoli, or peas when you add the chicken.
