Cuisine: American, Mexican
Keyword: habanero, hot sauce, vegan
Servings: 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup pineapple (canned or fresh)
  • 4 habanero peppers (seeds removed or see note)
  • ½ small onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 small handful of cilantro
  • ½ inch piece of ginger
  • ¼ tsp ground cumin
  • 1 lime (juiced)
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  • Roughly chop all ingredients, add to food processor or blender with cumin, juice of one lime, and vinegar. Process until smooth.
  • Pour sauce into a small sauce pan and heat over medium heat for about 15 minutes to let the flavors come together and cook the ingredients.
  • Cool slightly, then pour the sauce through a fine mesh strainer to remove any pulp. I use the back of a spoon to help push the sauce through. If you want a chunkier hot sauce, skip the straining. Or you can strain the sauce, and then add a little of the pulp back in to reach your desired consistency.
  • Pour into glass jar or bottle, and refrigerate until ready to use.

Notes

When chopping the peppers, I removed all of the seeds and membranes as I didn’t want this to get too spicy. If you want to step up the heat, feel free to leave them in – or you can even add another pepper or two.
